A terrific modern noir. Dark, twisty, and nasty, it's as cool, sleek, and stylish as Roger's Scandinavian modern house. Dare I say it: Better than the Tattoo Girl movies, as the characters are more interesting and the plot isn't as wildly operatic. A tough to beat thriller.
Delightfully daffy and droll. Packed with jokes -- including ones hidden in the set dressing. May not be as all-out funny as the very best of Aardman, but well worth the time. A cute, sweet-natured pick-me-up. Some of the jokes will be too subtle for kids, but adults will enjoy them.
Hat's off to Stefan who was able to get 20+ attendees together, all coming at different times- trying to find each other among hundreds. Don't know how he does it! We all did find each other, had great seats and I enjoyed the event very much! Thx, Stefan!
Interesting little film - very well acted, and the script went much deeper than the obvious 'girl gets drawn into adult film industry' plot. And yes, the movie is very San Francisco :)
This was a powerful and frightening film that makes me want to act. Thank you to everyone who came! I just placed a request for it to come to the Aquarius and I hope that we might be able to make it a Meetup event when it is there, too.
Thank you to Trinity and CIPL for making this available to us for free!
I hope people get a chance to see this doc at the SFIFF and at the theaters. It's as scary as The Hunger Games and hopefully encourages people to take some action. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2012/04/12/PK5V1NV6EB.DTL It was a treat to hear Prof. Tyrone Hayes speak after the screening. Thanks Kate, for organizing!
The movie left me a bit torn. While acting and cinematography were first-rate, the script was not up to par and could have used a few rounds of trimming. Too many scenes felt out of context. The pacing was very slow, and the music hinted very much at a comedy which the film clearly is not. All in all a good but not great movie.
I loved the movie but was discouraged by the extremely negative comments on the part of the organizers immediately exiting the theater, As a resukt I felt very uncomfortable and left. I found the person sitting next to me who was not with the group much more friendly as well.
I really enjoyed my first meetup with this group, great to have an interesting discussion after the film with others that have such great insights and ideas about the film. The film itself I experienced as definitely good, not a great 'blow me away' film, but interesting and I always appreciate a film I learn something from. Nice, down to earth group. :) Looking forward to the next meetup I can join you for. :)
Thanks Stefan and Daniela for hosting another fun Oscar party! When filling out our ballots, it's always a choice between "who we want to win" and "who Hollywood wants to win"!
Eileen is a very gracious hostess, so good at it, in fact, that I think some of us will be hoping (and hinting - wink, wink :)) that she schedule more potluck soirees at her place. :) Thanks, Eileen for a great Oscar celebration.
If you're interested in meeting up occasionally to see a film, mostly independent and sometimes not, and also meet some cool people, then this is the meetup for you. We usually stick to theaters around Palo Alto, Mountain View, and Redwood City. We also meet for coffee or dinner, before or after depending on the movie time.
Please check out our "About" page to learn more about the group.
