We'll go to the 8:00 PM show. If you'd like to eat before the movie, we'll meet at Cafe la Tartine (click for info), across from the theater, starting at 6:45 PM. Note "dinner" in your RSVP, so we can get a head count. Order and pay at the counter. Non-diners, we'll see you in the theater around 7:45 PM. Note: Since this is the first weekend, you may want to consider ordering tickets in advance!
A young lawyer (post-Potter Daniel Radcliffe) travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals.
This is the latest effort (after the remake of Let the Right One In) to revive the Hammer Films franchise, and a return to the classic, Gothic creepiness that made those 1950-60s movies so much fun. It's not about gore (it's only rated PG-13!), but rather creaky floors and squeaky doors, deep shadows, and mist-filled isolation. Should be a special treat for those who remember Hammer's classic chillers with Peter Cushing, and Christopher Lee.
In her NY Times review, Manohla Dargis wrote: "A creaking, shrieking haunted-house amusement and a solid addition to the recently resurrected Hammer Films the company where Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing once reigned The Woman in Black makes the most of its old-fashioned virtues. Schooled in the art of the quiet boo, Mr. Watkins fills the film with squeaking doors and floorboards, pools of black, long silences and an assortment of moldering toys. Less gore is more here, and what a relief. The Woman in Black isnt especially scary, but it keeps you on edge, and without the usual vivisectionist imagery." (Read the review)
After the movie, we can return to Tartine for coffee/dessert. Gather in the lower lobby, near the main entrance.
