Free Screening: Autumn Gem

Our member Adam Tow has invited us to a screening of his documentary feature "Autumn Gem" that explores the extraordinary life of the Chinese revolutionary heroine and women’s rights activist Qiu Jin (1875-
1907).

Please check out the trailer and the website

The directors/producers Adam Tow and Rae Chang will be present for discussion and Q&A after the film.
The screening takes place at the Cubberly auditorium on the Stanford campus. We'll meet up between 6.30 and 6.45, the films starts at 7pm.

Here's Adam's synopsis of the film:
AUTUMN GEM explores the extraordinary life of the Chinese revolutionary heroine and women’s rights activist Qiu Jin (1875-1907). This project brings the story of Qiu Jin to the screen in the form of a biographical documentary produced in HD video. It offers a fresh perspective on women in China by sharing the story of a figure known as the country’s first feminist. In exploring the life and work of Qiu Jin, the project unveils a remarkable chapter in the history of modern China and provides a deeper understanding of the lives of Chinese women today.

We produced and shot the majority of the film right here in the Bay Area. Discerning eyes might notice locations such as Tilden Park (Berkeley), Hakone Gardens (Saratoga), Overfelt Gardens (San Jose) and Vista Point (Highway 280) among our shooting locations!

I really enjoyed the evening and the film. It was great to meet and listen to the producers talk about themselves and the experience of making the film. I thought it was insightful of them to engage a scholar to speak to us before the film. The preliminaries and the film were enjoyable and illuminating. I would have stayed after the film concluded but the auditorium was uncomfortably warm for me.

Loved seeing a film by local people about a feminist not known to me in China. It was very good.
