Precious @ Aquarius

Aquarius Theatre (map)

Selected By: Stefan

By now most of you will probably have heard about "Precious".

Set in Harlem in 1987, it is the story of Claireece “Precious” Jones (Gabourey Sidibe), a sixteen-year-old African-American girl who is pregnant for the second time by her absent father; at home, she must wait hand and foot on her mother (Mo’Nique), a poisonously angry woman who abuses her emotionally and physically. School is a place of chaos, and Precious has reached the ninth grade with good marks and an awful secret: she can neither read nor write. Threatened with expulsion, Precious is offered the chance to transfer to an alternative school. In the literacy workshop taught by the patient yet firm Ms. Rain (Paula Patton), Precious begins a journey that will lead her from darkness, pain and powerlessness to light, love and self-determination.

The film won 2 prestigious awards at the Sundance festival and the another one at the Toronto Film Festival. For those who didn't get into the free screening we had last week, we are going to watch it at the Aquarius.
Here's the review on SFGate and the Synopsis on RottenTomatoes

The film starts at 7pm, I'll be at the theater at 6.30

For those who'd like to meet and eat prior to the show, we will meet at the University Cafe starting 5.30. Dinner reservations are closed now. I have made reservations for 12 at the University Cafe for 5.30. Please remember to bring CASH to cover your part of the tab.

If you'd like to meet after the show gather outside the theater and we'll pick a place to go to.

I'm getting the tickets now so the 'discounted ticket' option is closed.

The film didn't completely live up to my expectations, but it is still good with some remarkable performances, first and foremost from Mo'nique. Dinner and post-movie discussions were great as always!

Given the extreme melodrama, it's hard to tell what this movie wants to say about the experience of being poor and black in America. Fine performances. Neither as brutal as the trailer would lead one to believe (admittedly, a matter of degree), nor as "hopeful" as some reviewers have suggested -- at least, if you really consider where the main character is left at the end. A good movie, but I can't call it great. University Cafe: Good food; amateurish service (sigh)...

Heart-wrenching and powerful. Being a girl, I cried my eyes out. Really glad I made time tonight and saw it.

Amazing film and the pre-movie dinner spot was a great idea. Thanks for coordinating Stefan. The discounted movie tickets were a plus as well.
